Record what happened, after it happened
A schedule is a plan; a shift record describes work already completed. Record the actual start and finish, the date, the breaks and the agreed rate while the details are still fresh. A planned shift that was cancelled should not silently become earnings.
For overnight work, record the full interval and the correct dates. If a shift starts on Monday at 22:00 and ends on Tuesday at 06:00, it is one eight-hour interval. Do not enter the same hours again as a second Tuesday shift.
- Check the calendar date and actual start and finish.
- Write the number and duration of breaks, and whether they were paid.
- Keep commuting time separate from paid working time.
- Use the rate that applied to that particular shift.
- Add a short factual note only when it helps explain a change.
Make the arithmetic visible
Elapsed time is not always the same as paid time. Subtract only the breaks recorded as unpaid. A paid break stays within paid hours. If you are unsure about a break, check the agreement or ask the coordinator instead of choosing the option that produces the result you expect.
- Night work, overtime and other additions may require a separate explanation.
- The simple example does not determine any statutory premium.
- A saved record should show its assumptions, not only a final number.
Keep old rates with old shifts
When your rate changes, earlier shifts should keep the rate that applied then. In WorkLens each saved shift has its own rate. Changing the current job settings does not rewrite those entries. When repeating a previous shift, review the date, times and rate before saving; a one-off bonus should not be copied by accident.
Correct a mistake as soon as you find it. If two entries overlap, check whether one is a duplicate or whether the time is wrong. An empty calendar day means no entry, not proof that you did not work.
Make a backup you can find
The WorkLens journal is saved in the browser where you choose to save it. An installed app icon does not create a cloud account. Changing phones, clearing browser storage or using another browser can leave you without those records.
Download a JSON backup regularly and keep it in a place you control. A PDF or CSV is useful to read or share; the JSON backup is the format intended for restoring the journal. Before sharing, check the dates, names and amounts in the file. A local record can be edited, so it is your own working record, not independent proof of attendance.
Before you finish
- The recorded work actually happened.
- The dates and overnight interval are correct.
- Unpaid breaks and travel are separate.
- The rate matches this shift, and I have a recent backup.

A practical record helps you ask a precise question. It does not verify an employer, replace a contract or decide a legal entitlement.
